WOW. It’s been a whirlwind of a month. Wedding planning is officially underway and I have officially lost an estimated total of 10 hours of sleep already because of the inevitable bouts of anxiety! We recently went wedding venue hunting, and quickly realized that there is no such thing as a “perfect” venue (surprise!). After our fifth venue visit we were beyond confused! Downtown wedding, garden wedding, beach wedding? The only thing that helped clarify our decision was to come up with a short list of non-negotiables: he wants to wear a tux and sip old fashioneds, I want everyone to dance so hard that they’re sore the next day. With that in mind, we were able to confidently determine the best venue for us (even if that meant saying no to the gorgeous garden venue – a 9pm curfew simply wasn’t going to work!).
This concept of non-negotiables can apply to just about any decision-making scenario. I define non-negotiable items as things that might not always be necessary, but they bring such immense amounts of joy and happiness that they are worth the splurge.
I always keep this definition in mind when I make purchasing decisions. All it takes is asking myself, “Is this REALLY worth it to me?” to ensure that I don’t overspend on something that doesn’t really serve me. My current non-negotiables are weekly dinners/drinks with friends and regular date nights with my guy. I get SO much joy from the time I spend connecting with close friends so the splurge is 100% worth it. I make sure I don’t over-do it by not splurging on other tempting purchases - for example, I bring my lunch to work almost every day in order to justify my sometimes “spend-y” dinners.
Your non-negotiables might be completely different than mine, and that’s ok! Yours might be daily cups of Starbucks coffee, weekly nail appointments, monthly massages, monthly passes to your favorite workout class or yoga studio, a monthly clothes shopping budget, etc.
So tell me, what are your non-negotiables? I’d love to hear!
